Another Great Week in Laos

This week was very fun and busy. So, we started on our English classes but It was quite a slow start. We met with all the students and got them separated into classes. They canceled our English classes for the rest of the week though because there were too many people, So, we will maybe start teaching soon.

On Tuesday, we had a handover. I think I have mentioned handover's before but they are after DIC builds a bathroom or water tower for a school we go over to the school and have a handover ceremony. This week we went out to a school an hour or so outside of Vientiane. There we built 8 toilets and one water tower. That is great, they are so grateful to have a bathroom and running water. At the handover, we translate and get to play games and entertain the kids. It is a super fun responsibility to have. This time we taught them how line dance and we played some freeze tag.

Like usual, lots of visiting members this week. Fun story, we were on our way out to visit this member and on the way out, I starting to feel sick. We got to her house and she had prepared a feast of a meal for us. Lao food is a little crazy, sometimes with the flavors they always shoot for extremes of salty, spicy, bitter and any other type of taste. So, it isn't the best to eat when you are not feeling well. I start off slow knowing my stomach is not in good shape. But the member, having prepared a lot of food, is really active at putting really salty, spicy, bitter… foods on my plate for me to eat. Putting on full fish and odd vegetables that I had never eaten. I continued to eat to help this member feel good about their cooking. I told them I was full and then got one last plate load from them and I finished it up starting to feel quite awful. We talked for a while and I was feeling about ready to throw up. I hold out and we get up to leave and Elder Smith-Driggs does some final goodbyes as I walk over to the corner of their yard. And I stealthily vomit several times. The walk outside and Elder Smith-Driggs walks over and says are you throwing up? So, that was fun. The day after that, I was not feeling that well, as well, but I am back at full strength by now.

Saturday was a fun day. We taught English to a less active member. He has a family but his Mom is the only active one. The whole family came to church, though yesterday they all had a great time too! We also had and activity cleaning the church on Saturday. We moved our meeting spot from the third floor to the second floor, because the old residence has moved all out of the second floor so we cleaned the second floor up and got it ready for Sunday meetings.

Another fun story from the week. Last night we were visiting a family that just sent their daughter out on a mission to Australia. Anyway, as we started talking to this family, we realized that they didn't have any way to contact their daughter. So, we stopped and set up an Email for the Mom and taught them how to use it. We also let them know they can Skype their daughter in like a week. They don't have access to Skype so I think they will end up doing a phone call. So, we hope that all works out.

They have plans to increase the number of Missionaries here in Laos back up but it will take time to do so. They want to spread out people over different agreements with the government so we don't all get swept out in one shot again. So, they are waiting for a new agreement to close and then they will put two new Elders on that. I think this transfer only Elder Saunders will come up then the next transfer two new Elders will come up then the next transfer another two will come up.

Yesterday was a great day at church. We had 131 people there! We had great testimonies and it was the homecoming for a Lao missionary. We had 5 investigators at church. One investigator, Tagsin, has come to church every Sunday since we have started up. He hasn't missed a single time, he is just waiting to be taught and baptized.
