So, I will try to do a better email this week. Today we are in the
middle of the New Year (Thai/Lao New Year’s) festival. For those who are not
acquainted with Thai new years it is quite a big deal. All the people, all over
Thailand and Lao, go back to their home town and celebrate with their family.
This celebration includes music, dancing, and most of all, water fighting. The
water fight is quite intense. Everywhere you go people are throwing buckets of
water at you or squirting you with a squirt gun. There is almost nowhere safe
except for inside a house or building. This festival goes on for about five
days. The lame part of this, while being a missionary, is you only have one p-day,
so the other four days you are stuck having to try and be out and about working
but everywhere you go people just throw water on you. The good thing about it
is that there are a lot of people out and people are at home with their
families. So, there is still a lot of good to the festival. However, being in
Laos it is a little bit different for us. Because we use 100% of our time
trying to be with members here, we are a little more free to spend time with
them through the holidays. We can’t exactly use the holiday for contacting here,
so we just do the best with what we have.
Other than that, the last week and a half has been eventful. Last
week was filled with visiting members. Some of the more memorable visits
included: A trip up to the northern members with President Tiger (1st counselor
in the Mission Presidency), Visiting a family of nine kids; all raised by a
single grandma, and a birthday party for one of the YSA’s.
This week we have been busy traveling all over. We had to renew
our Thai visa’s, so we had to go down to Bangkok. It was odd. I hadn’t been to
Bangkok in 8 months so it was weird to be in a big city again. We got back to
Laos Wednesday night. It is good to be back and know our visa stuff is all good
to go now.
Things are going well here.
