Visiting Members

Well, like usual, so many great things have been happening this week. This week was really focused on the members and we really didn’t have anything else distract us from that. It has been great. I really feel like we are building up the branches right now, even without being able to teach investigators. Things have all calmed down from New Years, so it was a pretty normal week in that regard. Some of the memorable visits from this week were as follow:

We were visiting a family a few kilometers outside of the city. The husband’s name is brother Boonthun. He is active and awesome in our discussion with him. He was talking about how great God is, and how, with God, we wont have bad in our lives we will only have good things. This was quite amazing to hear from him as he testified of how he only has good things in his life now that he has God. I looked around and see he lives in an unfinished house that he has been building as he gets money. He has been building it for about 5 years. He has a lot of things he could complain about, or that he could call bad, but those things dont matter to him. I thought this was a great example of having God as our number one priority. When He is there, our physical environment is not as important as our spiritual environment.

Another great moment from this week was Sister Bua. She just received a mission call and is assigned to the California, Santa Rosa mission. So, we had to get started on doing her visa work for that. So, Sister Bua grew up on a farm and does not understand technology and doesnt know any English. When we met with her, we had to show her how to use a computer. It was interesting to see, as we had her use a keyboard and mouse for the first time, she stared at the keyboard for about ten seconds before finding the character she needed and then pressing it with an outstretched pointer finger.

On Saturday, Elder Smith-Driggs and I decided to bike out to some members that live in Naka. Naka is about 36 kilometers from where we live. It was fun. It took us about an hour and a half each way and we were going fast. When we got back, we were very tired and we still had an appointment with a member to bike to. We called the member and had them come and meet us at a park close to our apartment so we didnt have to ride a bike. Hahahaha.

One of the members we visited in Naka was great. His name is Pa Khamwad he is the second counselor in the Second Branch. He is amazing! He has been learning English his whole life and has started up this classroom in the middle of nowhere where he teaches English to young kids. He does this for free, to help the younger generation. On top of that, he loves to read books written by the church such as gospel principles or one of the Teachings of the Prophet books. As he reads them, he translates these books into Lao at the same time. He just writes the translation underneath the English. Then when he does a whole book he reads through it two or three more times to make sure his translation is good. We got to visit him this week and see his classroom and all the books he has translated. He is such a great, God loving man.

Things are going well here. Church yesterday was fun. We were able to watch another session of conference and have the Sacrament. A lot of members came too, so that was all good.

Other than that, not much else happened. Things are going well here.

Song Kran

Well, it has been a short few days since I emailed last, so I feel I don’t have that much more to add. The New year’s festival was a lot of fun.

Saturday was the best we went up north to visit the members there and had a good day there. We made and ate some Lao food and we got to go and have a good water fight at this river. It was funny while at the river Elder Smith-Driggs and I were wading up to about our knees or so. And one of the members says, “Do you both not know how to swim?” Then we replied “Actually both of us used to be lifeguards.” So that was funny. Sometimes it is a little bit difficult to not be able to swim as a missionary. We still had a great time.

We both got sunburned because it was a way hot day and we did not have the normal missionary clothes like usual. Sunday was also great. We got to watch some General Conference here.

It took a while to get the Lao translation of Conference here but we have it now. Another fun thing from this week was the first councilor in the mission presidency and his wife were up here to participate in the new year’s festival and visit members with us. His name is President Tiger (เสือ) he is a funny guy that is fun to be around.

Other than that, not much has happened. We are visiting members. Before, when I was here and we didn't have a church, we visited the same 30-40 members over and over again. The great thing about having a church now is we are seeing all the other members and able to get to know them and go to their houses as well. We still aren't teaching English and we think it might be another few weeks before that starts. That is no problem though because right now we are getting to visit members all day and it is awesome.

Bangkok, Visa's and New Years!

So, I will try to do a better email this week. Today we are in the middle of the New Year (Thai/Lao New Year’s) festival. For those who are not acquainted with Thai new years it is quite a big deal. All the people, all over Thailand and Lao, go back to their home town and celebrate with their family. This celebration includes music, dancing, and most of all, water fighting. The water fight is quite intense. Everywhere you go people are throwing buckets of water at you or squirting you with a squirt gun. There is almost nowhere safe except for inside a house or building. This festival goes on for about five days. The lame part of this, while being a missionary, is you only have one p-day, so the other four days you are stuck having to try and be out and about working but everywhere you go people just throw water on you. The good thing about it is that there are a lot of people out and people are at home with their families. So, there is still a lot of good to the festival. However, being in Laos it is a little bit different for us. Because we use 100% of our time trying to be with members here, we are a little more free to spend time with them through the holidays. We can’t exactly use the holiday for contacting here, so we just do the best with what we have.

Other than that, the last week and a half has been eventful. Last week was filled with visiting members. Some of the more memorable visits included: A trip up to the northern members with President Tiger (1st counselor in the Mission Presidency), Visiting a family of nine kids; all raised by a single grandma, and a birthday party for one of the YSA’s.

This week we have been busy traveling all over. We had to renew our Thai visa’s, so we had to go down to Bangkok. It was odd. I hadn’t been to Bangkok in 8 months so it was weird to be in a big city again. We got back to Laos Wednesday night. It is good to be back and know our visa stuff is all good to go now.

Things are going well here.

Visiting Members and a New Apartment

This week was great. We were basically visiting members all week. It has been great. We also got an apartment so it was really nice to move out of the hotel. Things are going really great here.

It was interesting yesterday as we were biking to church, it started raining so hard that I couldn’t see where I was going. I had to put on my sunglasses to keep the water out of my eyes. It soaked everything, head to foot. But it was fun, we got to church and were dripping wet.

Before, when we had the church, Elder McGill was the pianist and he’s pretty good at the piano, but he’s finished his mission since then and there are not really any of the members here that know how to play the piano so it’s kind of my job now. It’s ok. I can do enough to play so it’s going well. Besides that, church was really nice.

We are still held back in that we don't have any English classes yet. We are still on tourist visas until our English visas come through and also we can’t teach investigators yet but both of those things should be fixed in the near future.

Being here with Elder Smith-Driggs is a lot of fun. He is a great missionary and is really good at socializing with members and other people we meet. Elder Smith-Driggs has about 3 months left on his mission so he will finish his mission here. I will also finish my mission here but I have a bit longer.

One of the highlights of this week was President Johnson coming to Laos to do some business for the church. One morning we ate breakfast with him and a few of the lawyers from Hong Kong. That was fun. One of the lawyers introduced us to some of the things that he ate on his mission. Then we showed him some of the fish guts and stuff that we eat here.

The food here actually isn't too bad once you get used to it. I enjoy almost all Lao food.

I don't really have too much for today. Everything is going really well and we are having a great time.
