Zone Conference, Progressing investigators and Visitors

This week was really great.

Our investigators are doing really good. Last week we had a lot of investigators at church and five of them were new investigators, so that was great. The new investigators are: Pe, Pa, Gone, Sigh, Tawsomsai. Our old investigators are still doing great. Sister Da will be baptized tomorrow and we have some other investigators that are looking super promising right now. Sister Lisa has been an investigator for about 2 years now and is taking her baptismal date really seriously and preparing herself for the 8th of next month. We also have a third investigator named Gwan that has a baptismal date for the same day. So, things are looking super good right now on the investigator front. It is really nice to have four Elders for teaching after church. Even though the new guys are not that experienced, they are already having to split off with members and teach by themselves on Sunday. They are way awesome and are doing a great job.

So our week was pretty normal on most fronts. Lots of visiting members, eating lunch with English students and teaching.

This last Thursday, Elder Saunders and I went to Thailand for Zone Conference. The two new guys had to stay behind because their current Visa's don't allow them to leave the country. It was a way good conference with lots of good training. After the conference finished up, we left with President and Sister Johnson and the AP's. They are going to have an activity here today and then come to church as well tomorrow. So tomorrow should be a fun day.

Today, before the Fireside we have some fun plans for the day. In a little bit we are going to go play basketball, then after that we are going to do some sight-seeing around the city with President and Sister Johnson and with the Assistants. President Johnson's daughter and son and law also came over with us and are going to go around and do some sight-seeing with us, also.

Have a good week!

We had to try out the courtyard. Looked too much like a Kung-Fu set.

Crazy P-day, North Korean food, Tons of English Teaching and Progressing Investigators

9/16/17

So, I have very little time to write this today. It was a crazy busy day today. In the morning we taught an investigator, Sister Da, at the church. She is doing great and will be baptized next week.

For the rest of our day, we went on this crazy adventure into the middle of nowhere. We went searching for a cave that we never made it to. However, we did make it out to this way cool place with amazing views and it was really a fun day.  We probably biked close to 80 kilometers today.  (More pictures below.)

Also, on Friday we ate dinner at a restaurant owned by the North Korean government. It was a way fun trip. The waitresses were from North Korea and everything.

We taught a lot of English this week.

All of our investigators are doing great!

The new Elders are great. We don't have the new place yet so two people have to sleep on the coach or the hammock every night. It is temporary but very inconvenient. New Elders will also come up next transfer on the 19th of October. So, we will have six for a little bit before I go home.

I wish I had a lot more time to talk about the last week.

One funny story: There is a funny thing that people do here. Whenever people eat food in public they always say "Eat Food" as you are walking by them. They say it in Lao but it is confusing at what they are actually saying. You don't know if they are extending an invitation to eat with them or if they are just simply stating a fact. After talking to a few people about it they said they don't even know what they are saying or why they are saying it. It is just their culture to say that, if you are eating food and other people walk by. Just one of those cultural things!

New Elders!!!!!!!

9-9-17

So this week has been pretty good. This week has actually been pretty busy up until the new guys came in. Lots of meeting with members and different work we were involved in.

Our English term ended on Tuesday so Monday and Tuesday we were running testing for all of our classes. The new term will start back up this next Monday.

Tuesday during the day before English classes was way busy and fun. We got fed like three different times within about 3 hours. We had a Brunch with an English student, then went to a buffet for Brother Khampi's birthday, and then after that we ran to visit a less active member. Wednesday was another good day; we had some teaching at the church and also we got to visit some other members.

The MVP for this week is a Returned Missionary; his name is Brother Kid. Brother Kid is so hard working and is working a full time job from 3 pm to 11 pm and on top of that he has school from 5 am to 1 pm. His only day off from both of these is Sunday. This week however, his school had a week-long break. So, because he is just that awesome, he went out with us in the mornings, before work, several times this week.
So, on Thursday we went to Thailand and brought the new missionaries back into Laos. It was good. We were in Thailand for only about 3 hours but we had the time to get flu shots, get lunch and do a bunch of Visa work for the new guys. When we got back to Laos we went to the church and did some teaching and visited some people. That night we ate at another buffet where you cook your own meats. We went with some members here.

The last two days have slowed down a lot. We had plans to go up north to visit members both days but both of them canceled on us so we had some other back up plans. Today, instead of going up north, we played golf with a member from America that works for the Embassy here in Laos. We just did the driving range today, but it was really enjoyable.

We are so excited to have the new guys here. It is going to help a lot with teaching on Sunday. Oh, the new Elders names are Higginson and Hansen. I am companions with Elder Hansen and Elder Saunders is with Elder Hansen. So, things are going great. All of our investigators are still doing great and progressing. So good things are happening here.

Companion exchanges and a fun P-day

2 Sept 2017

So, this week has gone by fast. It really hasn't been that long, because last time I emailed was Monday.

We had a few fun things go on this week. On Tuesday, we visited this less active  member who is coming back really strong right now. His name is Buntawe. So, we go to his house and he totally surprised us with this lunch he prepared. I was taco pizza. It tasted really good. It was just this weird fusion of Mexican/Italian/Lao/and American food all wrapped up into one item. That was a fun visit.

On Thursday, we traveled to Udorn after English class and on Friday we did a companion exchange with the Zone Leaders. I was with Elder Santeco. It was a fun switch off and we got some good proselyting in.

Today has been a lot of fun. We visited a few members up north and as we got to the last house, they took us out to this reservoir. So, we spend a lot of the day hanging out with this awesome family and enjoying some good hot dry weather and having a nice Lao picnic.

In answer to your question, I would say that about 5% of the houses in Laos have hot water. Granted it is always hot here, so the tap water isn't too bad. The 5% that have it, only have it for showers, not for washing clothes or anything. Lucky for us, both of the places I have stayed at have had hot water for the showers. We are moving houses soon because there are new Elders coming in this week and only one of the two showers has hot water. It would be really hard to have four people shower from one bathroom and get ready before eight so I volunteered already to take the non-hot water shower.

In answer to your question about practicing the piano to play in church every week, I don't really get to practice at all. Most of the songs we sing are set now so they don't change. We also do sing one or two random songs every week. I still don't play that well. But nobody else at church has any idea how to play, so I don't get any heat if I mess up. I do miss sitting down and singing sometimes. It was funny a few weeks ago I was needed to play the piano for Sacrament Meeting and I was also needed to translate the meeting for the English speakers in the audience and I was giving a talk. Something was also going on so Elder Saunders was not free. So, the whole meeting I was just running back and forth from the piano to the translating table to the podium. It was stressful and tiring.

Well, that is all for this week. I don't have that much time. Good news this week. We are getting two new Elders, so it is going to jump up to four Elders here in Laos.

Church Madness, Bangkok and The Airport

27 August 2017

So, a lot of great things happened in the last week and a half. The last two Sundays have been great and we got new people to teach. Just for a little insight into our Sundays here in Laos, I am almost never with Elder Saunders. We are almost always split off with young men or another priesthood holder, just running around doing everything that needs to be done. We each probably switch the person we are with probably 6 times each Sunday. We do this so we can cover as much ground as possible. So, we split off, then we teach people, go to different classes, do random things for different members, talk to people, set appointments for the week, and about an hour and a half after church is over, we meet back up and each give a huge sigh of relief that we are done running around for the day.

Because we can only teach at the church, Elder Saunders and I kind of have different sets of investigators that we teach each Sunday. Last Sunday I taught two girls that came in with a friend (the same friend that brought Sister Basa to church). So, I taught a Restoration Lesson with an awesome Returned Missionary named Brother Kit. With his help, we had a great lesson ending with an invitation to read and pray. Unfortunately, with the Sunday Madness going on, they ran home before I got their phone number to follow up with them. So, the week went on and I tried to call the friend to get their phone numbers to follow up. I wasn't able to get a hold of her, so I wasn't able to follow up. We then had to go down to Bangkok for a meeting, without getting in touch with them. Then yesterday, at church, I was way happy to see them again. I got into a lesson and finally followed up on the Book of Mormon, only to find that they had read about 50 pages in already and want to be baptized! So, that was a great little miracle for the day. They have a Baptismal date set for the 17th of next month. Also, another great addition on the investigator front. We have an investigator that Elder Saunders is teaching right now. The Elders have been teaching for a long time. Like a year and a half or so. Her name is Sister Lisa and she comes to church every week and likes it but doesn't really read in the scriptures or pray and doesn't really have a desire to be baptized. So, she has never really progressed that far. Elders have just tried to teach her as much as we have time for on Sunday. Well, last Sunday, Elder Saunders got a lesson in with her and it went well. Then he taught her again yesterday. This time she had read and prayed everyday and had lots of questions about the things she read and had a desire to be baptized and has a goal for early in October. A real 180 degree turn. So, what I really saw and learned yesterday is the power of the Book of Mormon. I always looked at it as the way to know the truth of our message and filled with great knowledge about how to live our lives. Yesterday, I really saw the power it has to give desire to the people who need it. The Book of Mormon is an amazing book.

“Within the book’s pages, you will discover the infinite love and incomprehensible grace of God. As you strive to follow the teachings you find there, your joy will expand, your understanding will increase, and the answers you seek to the many challenges mortality presents will be opened to you. As you look to the book, you look to
the Lord. The Book of Mormon is the revealed word of God. Of this I testify, with all my heart and soul. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
—Elder Gary Stevenson  October 2016

The other people are doing great. They are all coming to church and doing great things.

So, one of the big things from this week was a trip down to Bangkok. Elder Saunders and I had a meeting for all the missionaries who are close to going home. It was great to be with my group that started in the MTC together. The meeting was good too. We were given a lot of advice about what to do when we go home and were advised to make a plan covering a few area's: Health, Education, Employment, Finances, Spiritual Strength, and Social Life.

Going down to the meeting was fun. The meeting was on Friday and we had English teaching Thursday night until 6:30. So after English class, we had a member drive us to the Border. We crossed over, then met another member in Thailand that drove us to the airport in Udorn. When we fly, we usually fly from Udorn because it is like a third the price of Vientiane. We made it there with an hour before our flight left. Once we went through security we went to sit down and ran into some Udorn members that we knew who were going down to Bangkok as well. So that was great. On the way back from the meeting we just took a long over-night bus back to the border.

One funny thing is the amount of times Elder Saunders and I have been to the airport in the last month. People keep going on missions, coming home from missions, going home from missions, moving to America, or just come to visit the Branch. Elder Saunders and I have been to the airport probably 10 times in the last month. Good thing it is only a 5 minute bike ride from the house.

Things are going great here.
